The year-end Championship meet season is winding down and FSPY swimmers have done a great job as they do every year.  Here’s a couple of the highlights thus far, with JO’s and Y- Nationals still to go. For more complete results and summaries check the “Results” column of the meet schedule and for full articles check the “In the News” section. Also be sure to check the “Movie Clips” for recently posted clips of some of these races.

8&U mini-meet (USS) – Eight year-old Lauren Davidson set two team records (50 back and 100 free) and had four top four finishes including a first place finish in the 25 back.

YMCA Bronze Meet –  FSPY swimmers 21 top three finishes including 7 first place finishes.  Eric Acosta (17 yrs-old) had three second place finishes, and  teammate David Verida (16) grabbed first place in all four of his races, setting Bronze meet records in every one.

YMCA Silvers – This meet in February had some great swims from every age-group with dozens of State times being reached. Loren Ball (15 yrs old) placed first in the 100 free and for the boys Matt Giardiello (13) had 3 first place finishes (200 back, 50 and 200 free) among his six top four finishes.

YMCA 12&U State Championships Among the many great swims, two 12 year-old boys stand out -  Alex Skoog and Marcel Green. Skoog placed in the top ten in all seven of his races (four were top FIVE finishes) including second place in 200 free. Green meanwhile, set three team records at the meet (50 free, 50 and 100 fly) with the 50 fly also setting a meet record. In all he collected 3 first place finishes among his six top-three swims.

9-10 Silver/Bronze (USS) – Nine year-old Monika Buryzinski has bragging rights on her older brother Alex, as she posted six top six finishes all with personal best times. Team newcomer Brian Kenny made the most of his day with three top ten finishes as well.

YMCA 13&O State Championships  - This year’s team was 6th overall at the 13&O states. Among the many great swims was an outstanding performance by the 13-14 girls relay teams. The team of Katy Comer, Jodie Thompson, Molly Gaynor and Sarah Cronin place second in both the 200 Free Relay and 200 Medley Relay setting team records in both races. Cronin also notched 3 top four finishes including first place in the 100 free with a team and meet record.

MORE HIGHLIGHTS – the fine performances keep rolling in at the year-end meets, a few of which are mentioned below. A few new photos and movie clips have finally been loaded, and the meet article summaries are up-to-date – so be sure to check out the “Piranhas Media” tab.

11-12 Silver/Bronze (USS): – Brothers Henry (12 yrs-old) and Eric Chang (11) combined for 4 top ten finishes including Eric’s 100 fly where he finished in second place and dropped over 7 seconds. Julie DiGiacomo had two top 10 finishes including a first place finish in the 100 IM improving her time by over 6 seconds.

Junior Olympics (USS):  Lots of great performances from a small contingent of Piranhas.  Michaela Valli led the way for the 9-10 girls with 3 top ten finishes including eighth in the 200 free with a team record. Brody Rash (10) scored in three events for the 9-10 boys. Twelve year-old Jason Steinberg scored in the 50 and 100 yard breaststroke events.  The 13-14 girls reprised their strong performance from Y-States by taking first in both the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relay events at JOs.  In doing so, Molly Gaynor, Katie Comer, Jodie Thompson and Sarah Cronin also set team records in these relay events thus giving these four a sweep of all five relay team records for the age-group.

YMCA Short Course Nationals – There were seventeen qualifiers this year with FSPY finishing 20th out of 215 teams. Seven team records were set including Will Brown’s ninth place overall finish and new team record in the 200 freestyle. The boys relays were in the top 16 in all five relay events.  For the girls Katy Comer (13-14) and Jessica Cronin (15-18) each set team records in the 200 backstroke for their age-groups.

Congratulations to these swimmers and everyone who has performed so well throughout the year.
